Suspect In Custody After Exchange of Gunfire With Police

MANCHESTER, NH- On Friday April 12, 2013, at about 10:20 AM, Manchester Police Officer Aaron Brown initiated a motor vehicle stop in the area of Somerville Street and Wilson Street.  During the course of that motor vehicle stop, a passenger in the vehicle suddenly fled on foot.  Ofc. Brown initiated a foot pursuit during which there was an exchange of gunfire where the suspect reportedly fired at Ofc. Brown, who subsequently returned fire.  Neither of them was hit during this exchange and the foot pursuit continued.

Ofc. Eric Desmarais also became involved in the foot pursuit, which led to the area of Lincoln Street and Silver Street, where the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.   An expansive crime scene was identified and has been secured and investigators remain on scene at this time documenting and collecting evidence, which includes three handguns discarded by the suspect during flight.

The suspect has been identified as:

Garrett Allen Gauthier

21 years old

Manchester, NH

Gauthier has been charged with Attempted Murder, three counts of Falsifying Physical Evidence and Possession of Controlled Drug (prescription drugs) with the Intent to Distribute.

Gauthier also has several active warrants including an arrest warrant out of Boscowen Police Department for Bail Jumping and an arrest warrant out of Loudon Police Department for Forgery.  He is also being held on an electronic bench warrant from Concord District Court for Violation of Probation and two electronic bench warrants from Franklin District Court for Theft and Criminal Trespass.

The vehicle in which Gauthier was a passenger left the area during the course of the foot pursuit but has since been located, along with its driver.  Manchester Police continue to investigate to determine the role this driver and vehicle played in today’s incident.
