Local Letter Carriers to “Stamp out Hunger” on May 11.

CONCORD, NH  (April 22, 2013) —  The 21st annual National Letter Carriers National “Stamp out Hunger” Food Drive will be held on Saturday, May 11. Local food pantries and social service agencies in the greater Concord area will be the recipients of non-perishable food as a result of Merrimack County’s participation.

Each year, more than 5 tons of food is collected and distributed locally through this collaborative effort of the NALC, Granite United Way-Merrimack County Region and the Capital Region Food Program. Last year, over 70 million pounds of food was donated nationally as part of the largest single-day annual food drive in the country.

“On the second Saturday of May each year, thousands of letter carriers step forward and join our co-workers, family members, friends and community partners to pick up those all-important and often heavy sacks of donated non-perishable food items left by mailboxes,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said.

It is easy to participate! Simply collect and bag non-perishable food items and place by the mailbox. A letter carrier will take it donations to the Capital Region Food Program for distribution.   To volunteer on May 11, please contact Val Guy at Granite United Way at val.guy@graniteuw.org or 603.224.2595 ext. 226.

Visit www.capitalregionfoodprogram.org for more information on how to organize a food drive, to donate and to volunteer, and to find a list of partner agencies supported by CRFP efforts.

###
The Capital Region Food Program (CRFP) is a private, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to help reduce hunger in the Greater Concord area through year-round distribution of food to individuals and families.  Since 1974 this has been accomplished by securing financial donations and in-kind services and by coordination, collaboration, and cooperation with other community distribution and service agencies.
The CRFP distributes over 100 tons of food annually through two initiatives.  Thirty-five (35) tons of food is distributed through the Year Round Distribution Project which is held eleven times a year. Over sixty-five (65) tons of food is distributed through the program’s Holiday Food Basket Project, held in partnership with the New Hampshire National Guard each December.

Teens Robbed of I-pod/Cell Phone

MANCHESTER, NH- On Monday, February 11, 2013, at about 6:30 PM, Manchester Police responded to a Clay Street address for a report of a robbery.  On arrival, they met with two 16 year old Manchester teens who reported they had been the victims of a robbery a short time earlier on Somerville Street, near Belmont Street.

According to the boys, they were walking in the area when they were approached by two men, one of whom demanded their belongings, indicating his companion had a gun, although no gun was observed.

One of the boys surrendered his I-pod Nano and Galaxy S3 cell phone and the men left.  They were last seen leaving the area as passengers in an older, dark colored 4-door sedan operated by a third individual who was possibly wearing a red sweatshirt.

The first suspect was described as a white male in his forties, about 6’3” tall with a slender build and dark “stubble” on his face.  He was last seen wearing a dark colored vest and a green “beanie” style hat.  The second man, alleged to have possessed a gun, was described as a clean-shaven white male in his forties with an average height and build.  He was last seen wearing a camouflage shirt and khaki pants.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Manchester Police Department at 668-8711.  Anonymous tips for cash rewards can be made through Manchester Crimeline at 624-4040 or online at manchestercrimeline.org.
