Anti-Casino Groups Laud Committee’s Vote to Kill Casino Bill

Concord – Casino Free New Hampshire and Granite State Coalition Against Expanded Gambling today lauded the Joint House Committee for its recommendation to kill the casino bill, SB 152.

“The Joint Committee spent three weeks attempting to address the failings of SB 152 but could not overcome the bill’s inadequacies,” said Lew Feldstein of Casino Free New Hampshire. “Thanks to Speaker Terie Norelli and the members of the Joint Committee, there was a careful review of the bill and they concluded that the certain costs outweigh the possible benefits. A state partnership with the casino industry would mark a major departure from New Hampshire’s public policy tradition.”

“It’s a very bad deal for New Hampshire,” said Jim Rubens for the Granite State Coalition Against Expanded Gambling. “Without providing certain, stable revenues for either the next budget or the future, SB 152 would do lasting damage to our state. SB152 would create more new addicts than new jobs and send millions of entertainment dollars that now circulate in our local economy to a Las Vegas operator. That’s bad public policy. We urge the House to support the Committee’s ITL motion.”

Representatives from both organizations are available for interviews. Please call 546-7461 to schedule.

See attached for detailed reasons why SB 152 failed and why the two organizations oppose a casino in New Hampshire.

Teens Robbed of I-pod/Cell Phone

MANCHESTER, NH- On Monday, February 11, 2013, at about 6:30 PM, Manchester Police responded to a Clay Street address for a report of a robbery.  On arrival, they met with two 16 year old Manchester teens who reported they had been the victims of a robbery a short time earlier on Somerville Street, near Belmont Street.

According to the boys, they were walking in the area when they were approached by two men, one of whom demanded their belongings, indicating his companion had a gun, although no gun was observed.

One of the boys surrendered his I-pod Nano and Galaxy S3 cell phone and the men left.  They were last seen leaving the area as passengers in an older, dark colored 4-door sedan operated by a third individual who was possibly wearing a red sweatshirt.

The first suspect was described as a white male in his forties, about 6’3” tall with a slender build and dark “stubble” on his face.  He was last seen wearing a dark colored vest and a green “beanie” style hat.  The second man, alleged to have possessed a gun, was described as a clean-shaven white male in his forties with an average height and build.  He was last seen wearing a camouflage shirt and khaki pants.
