Wagner “Pretty” Park: Renovations on the way

The trustees of Wagner Memorial Park in Manchester have announced that long overdue restoration work will begin this Monday.  The improvements to the iconic park will take place in two phases and are intended to re-establish its beauty through plant replacement, fence refurbishing, brick installation, bench upgrades and the creation of a new walkway leading to the park’s iconic domed memoria,l which has been at the center of countless wedding, prom, family and other special gathering photos and events over the decades.

Original benches to be re-situated

While still deserving of its nickname Pretty Park, vandalism, theft and overgrowth have diminished its luster.  An open house, hosted last summer by the Friends of Wagner Memorial Park, led to the improvements that are about to be done.  Existing vegetation located behind the memorial will be removed and replaced, new flowering trees will be planted and invasive species will be removed throughout.  Brick pavers will be installed around the memorial and a plaza will be created near the existing flagpole.  Four remaining original Wagner Park benches, many have been stolen due to their salvage value, will occupy the new plaza, providing park visitors with a place to socialize and relax in a serene setting.

Phase 2 area for next year

Phase one is expected to cost around two hundred thousand dollars and is being funded through the Edward Wagner and George Hosser Scholarship Fund established by the park’s founder Ottilie Wagner Hosser.  The work will extend through the summer months, taking place primarily in the eastern half of the park, which will be fenced off during construction.  As a result, the area surrounding the memorial, that’s the Greek column looking dome thingy, will not be available for photos or weddings until sometime this fall.  Phase two is scheduled for 2 0 1 8 and will focus on removing and replacing ground cover and overly mature plants on the western side of the park.

Senno: Suggests younger seniors citizens

Manchester’s  Director of Senior Services Gail Ann Senno is asking the Board of Mayor and Aldermen to lower the eligibility age to be an elderly services commissioner.  Currently, city ordinance requires at least two of the commissioners to be at least sixty years old.  However, in a letter to the board, Senno writes it’s been difficult to fill those positions due to lack of interest.  She hopes that lowering the age will help them find folks interested in serving.  If you or anyone you know is interested in serving, or would like more info, contact the Office of Mayor Ted Gatsas at 6 2 4 6 5 0 0.  He makes the appointments.
