Update on Town of Piermont

We have always said that your town town is a great place to start cleaning house. Piermont is a small town in Grafton County with a population of less than 800. You know how that goes, small town, no one watching, and the ‘we’ve always done it this way’ mentality? Teran “Terri” Mertz, wife of George Mertz, Commander, USN (Ret) was elected to a seat on the 3-person selectboard in 2016 for a three-year term. Her attempts to insure the town simply follow rules and procedures she alleges led to harassment, threats of arrest, and even an attempt to ban her from entering the town offices. She was concerned that the other two selectmen might be  holding illegal meetings, making payments to vendors without having followed legal contract procedures, and mismanaging meeting minutes. As soon as she began questioning, the attacks on her began. Even as an elected official she was being made to make written requests just to see certain documents. Eventually she filed a RTK lawsuit asking that they be fined and required to correct their actions and receive remedial training. They continued to try to defame Mrs. Mertz as she attempted to investigate inconsistencies with tax assessments by Avitar, and residents with unpaid taxes. CNHT has had experience with the town of Windsor in this matter. CNHT also has had quite a history with Avitar, and...

Your Town Government – Are You Paying Attention?

The presidential election is over but people are still too busy fretting and fighting over it to notice anything else it seems. CNHT heard little about town meeting outcomes this year. Where is everyone? A man who once came to one of our events even called town government affairs “small potatoes”. But nothing could be further from the truth. In NH, your largest tax bill is likely your homeowners tax. Your town and school meetings are where they decide to raise and spend the money. This writer has been on the board and worked with Coalition of NH Taxpayers for about 15 years. One of the hardest jobs we have is convincing folks that town government is their ground zero. Many town boards toot right along, unfettered in their old ways, at times not following proper procedure, because frankly, no one is checking up on them. We already know that in a town of perhaps 13,000 registered voters, we may be lucky to see150 people at the (old-style) town meeting, with 75 of them being town and school employees, ready to vote in anything they wish. Even in towns like Bedford which has approximately 13,000 registered voters and ballot voting (a system provided for by the passage of a law called SB2) town and school ballots are only cast by perhaps 2,000-4,000 people. Is it so hard to give...

Bedford Republicans to Host Gov. Sununu on June 28th

The Bedford Republican Committee will hold its annual Summer Social on June 28th, 2017 at the Riddle Brook School on New Boston Rd from 5:30-7:00 PM. Pulled pork, beans, and cole slaw will be provided. The featured speaker will be NH Governor Chris Sununu, the first Republican governor since 2005. With a majority in both Houses of the NH Legislature, Republicans are looking forward to accomplishing many goals during the upcoming legislative session. So far, the GOP has helped pass a bill that will allow school districts to opt out of Common Core, a bill that would make sure all residents are held to an equal standard so that every duly qualified voter who shows up to the polls has the opportunity to vote, and a bill that will allow students living in a town without a public school to have the opportunity to attend a public or private accredited school of their choosing in another community. Republican legislators are eager to work together to pass legislation that reflect conservative Republican views and ideals. “Now is the time to get things done”, noted BRC Chairman Valerie Earnshaw. “Republicans should come together to help pass bills that will support the NH GOP platform”, she concluded. While the Governor, our State Reps, and other prominent Republicans have been invited to speak, this is a free social event and thus all are...

Developers seek commercial expansion on Old Bedford Road

Abutters and residents oppose urbanization of Old Bedford Road area Will “commercial creep” raise property taxes while decreasing the property values of existing residential property in the area? Will mixed-used zoning have the potential to increase the school population more than can already be accommodated? Will the increase in commercial ventures on Old Bedford Road cause additional traffic on route 101 during rush hour? Will these commercial efforts effect a change in the rural flavor of the Town of Bedford? Submitted recently was a citizens petitioned warrant article for consideration to be placed on the March town ballot. The request is to change three lots on Old Bedford Rd. with a combined area of 19.55 acres, from Residential & Agricultural (R&A) to Commercial (CO). The three contiguous parcels proposed for rezoning include 18 Olde Bedford Way (3.88 acres), 20 Olde Bedford Way (3.65 acres), and 24 Old Bedford Road (12.02 acres). All of the parcels currently include single-family homes built between 1977 and 1986. This citizens petitioned warrant article was submitted by a planning board member, Attorney Karen McGinley, after requests for zoning variances by Attorney Karen McGinley, Devine Millimet & Branch, Chris Rice, T. F. Moran, and Gary Beaulieu, and Old Bedford Road Realty, LLC were abandoned. There are at least 9 abutters, along with many other residents, who do not agree that this zoning change should be...

Republicans Help Democrats Squash First Amendment

In a previous article, we listed all the Republicans who voted with the Democrats to allow the US Constitution to be opened up to unknown changes including the repeal of the Citizens United decision, which would mean only unions and media consortia (Soros, etc) would have the ability to bundle money. These Republicans also voted WITH DEMOCRATS, to KILL HCR1, a call to RESCIND all calls for an Article V Convention. It is now even MORE important that you tell your NH SENATORS to KILL HCR2 and SB 136 when they go before the Senate. Republicans Who Voted for Dem “Con Con” HCR2

The following is a list of NH House Republicans who voted for the Democrat “Con Con” bill HCR2. The bill calls for an Article V Convention and was filed by Democrats Rep. T. Smith, Hills 17; Rep. Theberge, Coos 3; Rep. Massimilla, Graf 1. It is no secret that hundreds of progressive groups, bolstered by funding from WolfPAC, a superpac founded by progressive talk host Cenk Uygur, and supported by Larry Lessig, liberal Harvard professor, have been calling for a convention since 2009. Included in that list are groups like the Sierra Club, Code Pink, Alliance for Progressive Values, MoveOn, and “Occupy,” all who have been pushing for a convention. In a book called Constitution 2020, one can see and imagine how the US Constitution might be rewritten to include social contracts. Experts such as Thomas Woods and Edwin Vieira say there is no way to limit the convention to just one issue. Learn who is holding hands in the effort. Excerpt: A current main page story outlines Lessig’s annual New Hampshire Rebellion walk which addresses the Left’s #1 priority, campaign finance reform. It is promoted as being anti-corruption, which no one would argue with, but the actual cause is campaign finance reform, as their site states. Further down the page, you’ll see links to MoveToAmend.org and Wolf PAC, two far Left Con-Con movements: In January, 1999, at the...

Sign the Petition to Stop the “Con Con”

Defend, not amend, the Constitution. Several well-meaning Republicans in NH and the US have joined with many not-so-well-meaning progressive groups in calling for an Article V Convention, also known as a Con Con, Constitutional Convention, or Convention of States. This is being done via filing various resolutions that would call for a convention in each state legislature. The renewed hysteria over amending the constitution seems to have been re-ignited by right-wing talk show host Mark Levin. Levin believes that nullification is not valid way to deflect illegal federal laws, despite assurances from the Tenth Amendment Center and scholars like Thomas E. Woods. Levin and Woods had a recent “disagreement” of sorts, but to date Levin refuses to debate Woods openly on the subject. There is a currently before the NH House a Concurrent Resolution, HCR 1, that aims to stop all calls from passing in this state. The NH Tea Party Coalition is a local NH-only group which includes several conservative groups that have banded together to work on various issues. Groups such as the JBS, the NH Firearms Coalition, and the NH Center for Constitutional Studies, support the position that calling for a “Con Con” would not make the Constitution any more enforceable than it is now, even if the conservatives pushing for it succeeded in keeping progressives amendments out. Constitutional experts such as Dr. Edwin Vieira and...
