Professor Deb Owens, author of the book “Origins of the Common Core” returned for her second visit to Inside Education. Deb talked about the relationship between George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton and how their agreements about public education brought about the creation of the Common Core Standards, high-stakes testing and the insertion of formalized teacher accountability based on student test scores. The concept of close reading and emphasis on “informational” texts as opposed to fictional literature has deprived students of the opportunity to enjoy and experience the beauty of language among other qualities inherent in good literature.Part 1
