Bomb threat not real

The Goffstown Police Department is investigating a bomb threat at the Hannaford Supermarket on Mast Road.  In a statement issued late yesterday afternoon, the department said a store associate received a call alleging there was a bomb in the pharmacy.  Goffstown Police and Fire responded and determined there was no bomb or other threat to employees or customers.  Anyone with any information about the threat is asked to call the Goffstown Police Department at 4 9 7 4 8 5 8.

Expanding, looking for teachers

The Founders Academy Public Charter School in Manchester is hiring and will host an education job fair at its Perimeter Road facility on Wednesday, March 8th.  This event is free and open to all applicants with a passion for teaching as New Hampshire charter schools are only required to have fifty-percent of their teachers be certified, so state certification is not required.  Applicants should bring their resumes, credentials, sample lesson plans and references.  They should also register for a ten-minute introductory appointment on the academy’s Web site, which we’ve linked to from this news read at Girard at Large dot com.

Teachers are being sought for classes in English, history, math, science, chemistry, technology, French, Spanish, Latin, band, chorus and artThe rapidly expanding school is also looking for school counselors and a Director of Faculty.  For additional information, contact Lauren Brouillette at 6 0 3 9 5 2 4 7 0 5, we’ve got her email address, too lauren.brouillette@tfanh.org.

Founded in 2014, The Founders Academy is a free public charter school for grades 6 through 12.  The school’s mission focuses on the virtues of the Founding Fathers, leadership, character building, classical and challenging education in the core subjects and elective courses, which I suspect is the reason for its rapid growth.  For more information or to schedule a visit, go to the founders academy dot org or call 603.952.4705.

NH House: Bills of note

As we well know, the General Court is in session and that means bills are being heard.  Of interest this week is H B 2 0 7, which would prohibit both the state Department and Board of Education from requiring any school or school district implement the Common Core national standards.  The non-partisan issue watchdog Cornerstone Action, to whom we’ve linked, supports the bill saying New Hampshire students deserve higher standards.  They’re urging parents to stand up for their children and for local control of education, by weighing in on the bill, which will be heard Tuesday morning.  We’ve linked to all the details you’ll need.

Notter: Fetal Homicide Bill up for hearing

On Thursday the nineteenth, the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee will hear H B 1 5 6, a fetal homicide bill that would give prosecutors the ability to file a homicide charge against anyone whose unwanted actions, such as an impaired driver, cause the death of a preborn child against the will of the mother.  That bill’s lead sponsor is Merrimack Republican State Rep. Jeanine Notter.  Cornerstone has announced it supports the bill.

Sullivan: If at first you don’t succeed

On Wednesday, the House Education Committee will vote on H B 1 0 3, Manchester Republican State Rep. Victoria Sullivan’s bill requiring school districts “provide advance notice to parents and legal guardians of course material involving discussion of human sexuality or human sexual education.”  The bill passed through the General Court last year, only to be vetoed by then Governor Margaret Wood Hassan at the urging of Planned Parenthood and the New Hampshire Chapter of the National Education Association.  Cornerstone as announced its support of this bill as well.

We’re sure there’s more, but we’re out of time on this Martin Luther King Day.
