Now enforcing road weight limits

Truckers beware!  The town of Goffstown has posted load/weight restrictions on roads throughout the town.  It says it is imposing the limits per state law during the spring thaw period to prevent roadway damage and protect their large infrastructure investment.  In a notice sent yesterday, officials say the posting typically lasts about four weeks from the initial posting date, which was yesterday.  Waivers may be issued by the Department of Public Works on an emergency basis, but only as road conditions allow.  For additional details, including specific postings and updates, visit the Streets and Drains page at goffstown dot com.

NH is second best

Perhaps it’s the zealous protection of our roads by towns like Goffstown that U.S. News & World Report recognized New Hampshire as the number two overall “Best State” in the country.  Perhaps it’s not.  But, however that figures, the magazine, which has become known for its “best of” issues, made the announcement that we were number two, woo hoo, yesterday.  Following the announcement, Governor Chris Sununu issued a statement saying, quote:

Sununu: It’s a good marketing point

New Hampshire is among the best states in the nation to live, work and raise a family.  Though we have much work to do to ensure that our state continues to grow and thrive, this announcement is something that Granite Staters can be particularly proud of today.  It will also serve as useful information to those considering moving their home or business to New Hampshire.

U.S. News evaluated sixty eight different pieces of data to create the Best States rankings.  The rankings are based on tens of thousands of data points provided by McKinsey & Company’s Leading States Index.  In calculating the rankings, categories were weighted based on a national “citizen experience” survey, conducted by McKinsey, that asked people to prioritize each subject in their state and provide their levels of satisfaction with government services.  We’ve got the link to the report with this news read at Girard at Large dot com.  You can also check out hash tag best states (#beststates) on Facebook and Twitter for .

Shaheen: Eliminate Electoral College

Hassan: What she said

Sununu, by the way, blasted comments made by Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Health Care Queen, and Margaret Wood Hassan in favor of eliminating the Electoral College at a joint appearance on Friday at the N H Technical Institute.  They, of course, favor the popular vote, proving they really don’t respect the voice of the states or the nature of the Republic when their political agenda is inconvenienced.  In comments given to W M U R, Sununu said quote:

Sununu: Who would listen?

It is appalling that Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan would endanger our state’s influential role in national elections by supporting the removal of the Electoral College, thereby ensuring that no presidential candidate would ever pay any attention to our citizens and our state.  Republicans and Democrats agree that New Hampshire’s place in the electoral process is fundamental, and for some to ignore that and put their party’s interest first is indefensible.

Lenten vigil launched

The annual Forty Days for Life forty day vigil outside of abortion clinics nationwide began at Midnight last night.  In New Hampshire, the organization has chosen to pray outside the Equality Health Center at thirty eight South Mains Street in Concord.  In past years, they’ve kept vigil outside of the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Manchester.  They’re inviting members of the public who want to participate in their peaceful, continual vigil and prayer-test to join them, the Knights of Columbus and others during the forty days of Lent.  Those interested in committing to hours of service or are looking for a prayer partner are asked to email concord 40 d f l at gmail dot com.  Additional information is available at 40 days for life dot com slash Concord.

Supervisors of the Checklist to meet

The Supervisors of the Checklist in Derry will meet on the evening of March seventh from seven to seven thirty to, register new voters, receive name, address, and party changes from voters, approve applications for voter registration, and approve changes to the checklist.  This session will be the last opportunity to register before Election Day on March 14.

Time running out for March elections

Applications to register to vote or to make changes to voter registration may be completed with the town clerk through March third, that’s this Friday, though voters can register at the polls on Election Day.  We suspect the Supervisors of the Checklist in other towns that will vote on the fourteenth are making similar announcements, so we encourage you to take a look at your town’s Web site.
