For Immediate Release
MANCHESTER, NH October 1, 2021–The recount in the Manchester mayoral primary concluded today. The results showed Republican candidate Richard Girard, who requested the recount, picking up five votes. Second place finisher Victoria Sullivan increased her vote count by three votes. Incumbent Mayor Joyce Craig gained seven votes. The final tally was:
- Richard H. Girard: 2,423
- Victoria Sullivan: 2,549
- Joyce Craig: 5,488
The number of ballots that didn’t register a vote fell from 116 to 109. There were 17 write-in votes.
Following the results, Girard issued the following statement:
The reasons for requesting the recount were many, including the wildly off recount results in Windham this past November, the approximately 900 absentee ballots, the very narrow margin between my finishing second or third and the dozens of supporters who wanted to see the results verified. At the time I made the request, I said the worst that would come out of this recount was that people might have some of their faith in the voting machines restored. While I’m disappointed to have lost by a mere 126 votes, I am pleased to say it looks like the machines did their job well and that made the exercise worthwhile.
I would like to thank the many volunteers who helped us today. They did a wonderful job, as did those running the recount. It was my honor to have them with me as it was my honor to have so many dedicated supporters throughout the campaign. I am truly blessed to have been in their company and am grateful.
