Rubens: No amnesty, fences first
G O P U S Senate candidate Jim Rubens is out with a plan to deal with illegal immigration. It fleshes out tenets he first articulated in a June eighteenth interview here on Girard at Large where he flatly refused to support any sort of amnesty plan. In a statement, as in the interview, Rubens advocates sealing the border using a variety of approaches including technology, fencing and personnel. He restated his opposition to amnesty, saying the surge in unaccompanied minors requires the law to be amended so that people from non-contiguous Central American countries are treated as those from Mexico. Rubens also said that while we should care for the children who’ve crossed our border, it should only be until they get sent back home, which should be sooner than later. Rubens was skeptical of some Republican lawmakers who have been willing to give up amnesty in exchange for securing of the border. Quote: “They ask us to trust in the government’s ability to secure the border over the next decade in exchange for amnesty now. The government has proven over and over again, as it did when Ronald Reagan agreed to amnesty, that it will not deliver unless absolutely required by Congress to do so. As your Senator, I will apply the pressure necessary to secure the border and enforce our laws.” End quote. Smith: All are welcome, all may question
G O P U S Senate candidate Bob Smith will be at the St. Anselm College Institute of Politics tomorrow night hosting an open Town Hall meeting. While you might not think this is unusual, in a world of scripted campaign appearances, it kinda is. Smith’s campaign emphasized in a statement that any and all questions from the audience will be answered and it is open to the public, not by invitation only. Smith said candidates for office should be willing to take any and all questions on any and all topics at any and all times and if they’re not, they shouldn’t be on the ballot. The Smith Campaign also announced they’re hosting The Confederate Railroad Freedom Concert at the Rochester Fair Grounds on August twenty ninth. Country Music superstar band Confederate Railroad will headline a day of music, activities, food, fun and fireworks. Tickets are now on sale for the pre-primary bash Smith says will celebrate our nation and remind people what’s good about it in these trying times of crisis. Livingston: Acting with board approval
Manchester Superintendent of Schools Debra Livingston contacted your Humble Host on Friday to clarify a recent press release basically saying the district had parted with tradition by hiring school principals prior to receiving school board approval. Livingston directed our attention to a July fourteenth action of the Board of School Committee authorizing her to tentatively hire personnel over the summer months, subject to approval of the board at its next regularly scheduled meeting. While she did agree that the press statement issued by the district could have been better worded and the answers provided by Communications Coordinator Andrea Alley could have been more responsive to our inquiries, she also said she would not engage in any such hiring practices without prior knowledge and approval of the board. Upon receiving the minutes of the meeting she cited, we posted the board’s action under all published stories and commentaries to ensure the record was correct and notified our newsletter recipients of the new information Now, we’ve alerted all of you who listen to the broadcast that Superintendent Livingston was acting pursuant to board action and thank her for alerting us to the board’s action. We apologize for missing that motion during the meeting.
LaFrance: Pereira alibi didn’t wash
Hillsborough County Attorney Patricia M. LaFrance announced that Neville Pereira was found guilty of Indecent Exposure and Sexual Assault following a two day jury trial. Pereira has or has had an ownership interest in many restaurants in including Ignite Bar & Grille, Hooked Seafood, Rouge Grill, and Sizzle Bistro in Manchester; Molly’s Tavern in New Boston; and the Captial Grille in Concord. The victim was an employee at the Rouge Grill where the assault took place. The testimony at trial proved that on June 2 2nd, 2 0 1 3, Pereira exposed himself in front of the victim inside the restaurant and later grabbed her hand and forced it on his genitals against her will. At trial, the defense claimed an alibi arguing that Pereira was at a different restaurant at the time, however the state was able to discredit those witnesses using business records from the restaurants. LaFrance’s release didn’t contain any sentencing details.
MPD: Called in the state bomb squad
They came, they saw, they blew up a homeless guy’s bag. That happened late last week after someone reported a suspicious bag outside the Norris Cotton Federal Building in Manchester. Manchester police called in the State Police Bomb Squad and ordered the building’s evacuation after failing to find someone to claim the bag as their own. After detonating the bag on the premises, investigators concluded it belonged to a homeless person and contained nothing suspicious. The good news for the unidentified, and probably unknown, homeless dude? No criminal charges will be filed according to the press release. Oh my head…
Candia Crime Wave: Super cop to the rescue?
The Candia Crime Wave continues to rage. Candia’s finest had a busy month, so busy, they released their July stats last week, a week before the month ended. From the twenty seventh of June to the twenty fourth of July, Candia cops issued one hundred nineteen motor vehicle warnings and ten motor vehicle summonses. They also arrested six individuals on a variety of charges from protective custody for a drunk twenty three year old female to DWI, to unlawful possession of alcohol, to theft, to possession with intent to distribute. Looks like Candia’s got a potential super cop in its midst, too as Officer Terilli made five of the town’s six arrests. Maybe Candia’s found the man that will turn the tide in its brave battle with crime. Stay strong, Candia, stay strong!
