Sid Glassner(Hour 3a, b, c)

(Hour 3a) Senior Fellow Sid Glassner countered the “deeply flawed schools” argument that some politicians insist on.

“We face problems,” said Sid, “we face and solve problems.  Problems that will never end.  The question is how we go about solving the problems.”

It’s the how that bothers Glassner from the “Globally Competitive” crowd.  All part of the modern mythology that is trumping truth today in the business of education.

Glassner illustrated his point with a couple of famous myths about two of our most famous presidents: Washington and Lincoln.

(Hour 3b) Glassner quoted another famous president, John F. Kennedy, to further illustrate his point about mythology trumping truth.

Sid challenged the mythology of Secretary of Education Arne Duncan for the con job that is Common Core.  Why are these “state led” standards seeking to rewrite American history and whittle down our glorious heritage?

(Hour 3c) Glassner commented on the federal intrusion of Common Core that has blunted local control.  And the blind acceptance of the standards by State Departments of Education and School Boards across the country.

He also called out teachers for not taking a stand.  Is the unionization and nationalization of the teaching profession a big part of the problem?

“Teachers need to stand up for the children.  Make a fuss.  Go on strike for good education instead of just striking for money.”
